Minor upgrade to server stuff

October 9th, 2011

I just bought a new UPS, a mustek powermust 800 with LCD as my old apollo 1000f died. I also bought an PC protectnet but I still have to connect it to the main power lines grounding.

After about 3 days of no internet and a previous week of online/offline due to who knows what, I finally managed to get the service back on a stable ground. At least I hope so.

Google Adsense breakthrough

September 18th, 2011

I received an email a few days ago from google saying “You’re eligible to receive an AdSense payment later this month”
Woohoo!
I finally hit the aprox $100/71 eur limit. Took me almost 4 years and 6 months.

Damn. And to think that this sum covers the internet connection (a professional one, I have to add) which costs 50 eur per month and the electric power, which is around 5-7 eur for the server per month; all this covers the basic needs of the server for a month and about a week.
And there’s the domains I have to pay about $40 per year…

I’m getting rich…

Well, next cheque in 5 years.

Siemens SK 65 Original Media (ringtones, wallpapers, GIFs, etc)

September 18th, 2011

My Siemens SK65 died about 2 months ago and ever since that time, I was trying to get my hands on the backup file contents.
I couldn’t get the original siemens mobile phone manager to read the backup (as I didn’t have an SK65 to do a restore). I obviously managed to get my contacts out since everything is in clear text in the backup file.
The sad thing is I can’t get the notes as for whatever stupid reason they decided notes are not important to backup/save (either that, or they are encrypted/mangled in some way).
The next thing I wanted were the ringtones. Man, I searched everywhere, and I found a lot of ringtones from other siemens models but not the ones on SK65. I then posted on some siemens forums to no avail.
And today, I got an email from GOTD (Giveaway Of The Day) about AllMedia Grabber. So I figured I’d give it a shot and what do you know. It got me out most of the media files and all the ringtones which were in midi or wave format.

So, long story short, find the original media files for Siemens SK65 here (3.5 MB).
Keep in mind that the contents of this zip hold original copyright notices held by Siemens or whomever and are intend for other siemens SK65 users that ended in my situation.

Call me old fashioned or whatever, but I’m now going to put those ringtones on my new HTC 😀

file X from install of Y conflicts with file from package Z

September 10th, 2011

Late time for a new update of my linux server.

This time, yum update got me these errors:

file /usr/bin/shasum from install of perl-Digest-SHA-5.50-1.el5.rf.i386 conflicts with file from package perl-Digest-SHA-PurePerl-5.48-1.el5.rf.noarch
file /usr/share/man/man1/shasum.1.gz from install of perl-Digest-SHA-5.50-1.el5.rf.i386 conflicts with file from package perl-Digest-SHA-PurePerl-5.48-1.el5.rf.noarch

You will notice that there are 2 distinct packages:
perl-Digest-SHA-5.50-1.el5.rf.i386
and
perl-Digest-SHA-PurePerl-5.48-1.el5.rf.noarch

I went with removing the oldest one because the new one was being marked for installation:
yum erase perl-Digest-SHA-PurePerl-5.48-1.el5.rf.noarch

and problem solved. This one was way too easy. Why I posted? Well, google search only yielded 1 spanish result. One. Well, this will make it 2 🙂 And in english.

MS Office COM/OLE objects to Open Office

June 30th, 2011

I have some applications written to use MS office COM. Specifically Excel. Everything was working nice and dandy until today. Because some time ago I decided to permanently move to open office and hence uninstalled MS Office. And today I had to use an application that was using the ms office OLE objects.

A little search found the solution. Transparent and without needing to rewrite/re-compile your applications:

AutomateIt:  http://sourceforge.net/projects/automateit/

Just install and you’re ready to OLE.
