[rant] Commission Junction – a load of crap

April 14th, 2008

I signed up for it almost a year ago. At one moment I had about 3 euros in my balance (big money 😀 ). But I stoppe dlogging in the site almost no revenue was beeing made. A few days ago I decided to check in to see how things went over the year and surprise: the account was disabled. After reactivating it, surprise again: all money was GONE.

One person would expect that a company that deals with somebodies money will notify that person prior to making changes to his/her account especially when those changes imply loosing the money, but no, CJ must do it under the hood so that they can steal your money (I hope you choke on those few euros I had because you’ll get all negative feedback from me you idiots.)

And now to remove all CJ ads from my sites and make a little nagative advertisment for them.

(ps: and before anybody starts talking about agreements and how this was *maybe* stipulated in one of them, grab some time to think which company that stipulates such stuff in their agreement worths your attention? Say you are out in a prolonged holiday or something. For some perfectly sensible reason you get a loong time away from your computer but still have access to email and … you get your account disbaled and money lost because .. it was stipulated in the agreement. like you have to remember to log in the site, when the idiots don’t even allow your session to survuve for more than an hour or something, so you cannot just leave your tab open.)

Tastes like shit

April 11th, 2008

I was just thinking about something when the saying "It tastes like shit (piss/etc)" came up in my mind. Being a logical person, I immedialty concluded:
the person saying that obviously tasted shit/piss/etc before.

I can already imagine: a guy enters a bar and asks for a beer. He gets some local whatever and when he gets a sip immediatly spits it back and takes it to the abrtender:
– What is this? Tastes like piss.
And then the bartender calmly replies:
– I’ve tasted piss before and it’s not even close.

Watch out for that firewall

March 25th, 2008

I spent about 3 hours trying to get rsync up. I was getting the following errors:
[code:1:d7652e64ee]
rsync: failed to connect to localhost: Connection timed out
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(97)
[/code:1:d7652e64ee]
finally I figured it out: iptables 😆 so I added an entry in iptables which allowed access to the rsync port (873) from the needed locations and everythin went smooth.

Dead web-projects

February 20th, 2008

Some of you may have noticed a few publicly available web-projects (mainly sites). Well, due to lack of time from my part, and probably becaue the ideas were not tha bright (for those which I had time to do something), most of my web-projects had reached their "end".
There are a total of 18 sites for which I no longer renew their domains.
From these 3 were "active", but did not meet the minimum visitors required in order for me to keep the domain active (which costs money).
So I redirect these to a sub-domain on my main domain (ciuly.com) and a directory as follows:
– www.my-delphi.info is redirected to http://www.ciuly.com/delphi/
– www.your-quotes.info is redirected to http://www.your-quotes.ciuly.com
– www.gugal.info is redirected to http://www.gugal.ciuly.com

January 23rd, 2008

all stated from this question:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/Pascal/Delphi/Q_23102229.html

this allows you to register your won protocol (not the default http://, but even “blabla://”) and your whatever namespaces. so you coul dhave in the same program
blabla://res_name/res_name
and
blabla://res_id/res_id
and
etc://whatever/something

of couse, the code requires a little modification in order to support the above stuff, but the modifications are basic/easy level.

attached you can find the pas files involved
contains 2 pas files to demonstrate how to load a mht from a stream

Moving/Transferring Windows XP Prof from desktop to laptop

January 7th, 2008

I finally did it. I moved my winxp porf installation from my desktop to my new laptop, overwriting theexisting vista installation (which sucks big time. Almost nothing from my existing NEEDED appications didn’t work properly.).
And here is how I’ve done it:
First step: http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2002/20020507_how_to_transfer_windows_onto_a_new_machine.htm
After removing all possible devices, I made a ghost image (using the bootable ghost cd) and transferred the image to the laptop and then written the image to the disk. Rebooting failed as windows went into BSOD. Booting into safemode did not help either as it BSOD-ed as well.
Next step: http://www.theeldergeek.com/replace_motherboard.htm
Well, I had a faulty windows installation, right? So, I fixed it using the recommendations above.
This worked 🙂
However, my avg complained of faulty license; needed to reinstall. Msn live messenger or what’s it’s name also complained about some fixed module and required restart.
Some of the older devices were still there. Removed them and installed the new ones.
I’m still in the process now, so if there will be any other applications that will require "something extra", I’ll post later on.

How Miscrosoft fights warez/piracy

December 28th, 2007

Well, it’s "official": Microsoft is SUPPORTING piracy. Sure, not officially 🙂 but unofficially. How’s that? Well, it’s pretty strait forward:
– in the US, one Windows XP Professional retail license is $299
– in the US, my brother-in-law, working in some factory doing manual labor, earned a little over $1000 per month
– in Romania, somebody doing the same kind of job, earns around $250-$300 per month (actually, most of them are earning around $200 but if I take that figure it will only look worse)
– in Romania, one Windows XP Professional retail license is aproximatly 350 [b:c126e682ab]euro[/b:c126e682ab], which is around $500

Conclusion:
– one less-average working guy in the US can buy 3 WinXP Prof retail licenses from 1 month of work and still have some money left
– the same guy in RO can buy 1 WinXP Prof retail license from 2 months of work and have aproximatly the some money left

a little more "graphical":
– in order for the US guy to buy 3 licenses, he needs to work 1 month
– in order for the RO guy to buy 3 licenses, he needs to work between 5 and 6 months

And Microsoft is complaining about a high piracy level in the balcans. No shit!
